The members of the 23rd Gavella Evenings' appraisal committee - Helena Braut, Tonko Loza, Pavo Marinković, Ivo Knezović and Jasna Bilušić, the
chairperson - would like to thank the festival's council for their given trust and the organizer, Gavella Drama Theatre, for its hospitality and its impecable organisation of the festival. Before announcing the winner, the committee would like to grant special recognition to the play ''Cowboys'' by Saša Anočić, performed by Exit Theatre, a play full of exuberant humour, director's imagination and actors' virtuosity which opens the chapter of a new and, above all, original popular expression in the Croatian theatre. The main festival prize is awarded to the play ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' by William Shakespeare, staged by Alekasandar Popovski and produced by Gavella Theatre. It is a production that miraculously modernizes Shakespeare's fairly demanding classical model and draws it closer, not degrading it at the same time, to the taste of the modern viewer. The Macedonian director Aleksandar Popovski has expressed a few original interventions which upgrade and enrich Shakespeare's classic and enabled the actors of Gavella Theatre, reinforced by the legendary Pero Kvrgić in the completely unexpected role of Puck, to shine in full splendour.
Gavella Theatre's ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' is a performance filled with director's imagination and ingenuity, actors' craftsmanship and European spirit. It's a performance that charms, yet doesn't pander to audiences, a performance which proves that even in the institutionalized theatre, despite the crisis, a superior theatre can be dreamt.
